Paths for walkers and cyclists

Paths for walkers and cyclists

We have recently added a section to the website giving information about routes around the village which are accessible to walkers and cyclists.

This includes routes which link to other settlements such as Huntly, local routes around the village and also part of a long distance route called the Kingdom of the Picts Trail.

Sadly at the moment, none of these is directly accessible off-road from the village. Generally a short distance is necessary on minor roads. We would like to develop routes which are directly off-road but so far this is not possible. Even the Tap O Noth requires a short drive, although we have planned a route from the village, this cannot be used presently due to difficuly on access.

We also provided information on paths to a project carried out for Huntly Development Trust to research paths in the AB54 area. This was concluded with a report in 2020 and it was proposed to make the information available on their website but this has yet to be completed. The report can be downloaded from HDT website here.

The Kingdom of the Picts project has been progressing slowly, mainly recently due to the CoVid restrictions. A route has been mapped but access agreements have yet to be concluded to allow its promotion. The route will eventually run from Huntly to Corgarff in Strathdon, helping to link communities in Strathbogie and Strathdon.

Access to these paths would be available under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and subject to responsible use. They are, at least for the present, not waymarked or signposted so some ability in navigation and map reading may be necessary. We have made available for downloading gpx files of the routes. These can be used in mapping software. Anyone using this information would be responsible for their own safety and should wear suitable weatherproof clothing.
